Affordable Assisted Living Facts

When my mother was hospitalized and was in bed for several weeks at a time she would lose the use of her leg muscles from lying down so much. From the hospital she would be transferred to a nursing home to receive physical therapy. Because of her therapy the insurance would cover a certain number of days in the nursing home but after that we were on our own. We needed to find an affordable assisted living facility for my mom because she was always to weak to be home on her own.

Anyone who has been on this journey before whether it be with a parent or spouse, knows that the difference between nursing homes and assisted living facilities is hugh. Affordable assisted living is a top priority for people who have a loved one who does not qualify for insurance coverage in a nursing home but who can not be on their own either. Mom could fall very easily and she did many times. Having her in an affordable assisted living facility meant that she would have aids that would check on her through out the day. Help her with her medications, bathing, the keeping of her room. Many different needs would be met by the staff.

Nursing homes are extremely expensive and many are very "hospital like." Affordable assisted living facilities are obviously less expensive and they offer a more "homey" atmosphere for their residents. Field trips, socials, apartment like semi-private or private rooms. All for a fraction of the cost of a nursing home. It is important to remember that in order to live in an affordable assisted living facility the medical needs of the person cannot exceed the skill level of the facility. In my mother's case we were able to place her in an affordable assisted living facility but we were required to pay for a private nurse to come in and assist with the central line she had in place. We also had to sign extra waivers and paperwork saying that the facility was not liable for my mom's medical issues beyond their normal level of care.

The affordable assisted living facility we chose was terrific and it made my mom feel comfortable in her own space while still receiving the care and assistance that she needed. My mom has since passed away but I will always be grateful for the care she received and the peace of mind I was able to have while she lived at the facility.
